Overview

Safe automatic crane handling

Cranes for moving medium-weight and heavy loads are used in nearly all production processes, for example in manufacturing facilities, the steel and chemicals industries, waste incineration, in ports and terminals and in power plants. Here, the safety of people and materials is an important factor alongside efficient positioning. SICK offers efficient solutions for collision avoidance between the crane and equipment, the handled cargo and people. Furthermore, SICK helps ensure increasing efficient automation of production processes through positioning. SICK offers all this, even under the most extreme ambient conditions.

Driver assistance systems based on SICK 3D LiDAR sensors (as well as 3D laser scanners) or 3D vision sensors reliably detect blind zones around mobile machines and warn the operator of potential sources of danger or accidents in good time. In addition to intelligent 3D assistance systems with the Visionary-B 3D vision sensor, the MRS1000 3D LiDAR sensor assists in maneuvering and navigation.

Anti-collision systems protect the DP World container terminal

Container terminals, which work around the clock, 365 days a year, have particularly high availability requirements. Collisions involving the booms of quay cranes and ships pose the greatest risk of interrupting daily operations. To prevent these, DP World, one of the world's leading port operators, has opted to use anti-collision systems from SICK for its cranes in the port of Dschabal Ali.

Equipped with a new groundbreaking object detection system: the port of KhorFakkan

The main task of Gulftainer Company Limited is control and operation of the container terminals in the ports of Khalid and KhorFakkan. One of the Gulftainer subsidiaries in the Indian Ocean (KhorFakkan Container Terminal, KCT) is located in the port of KhorFakkan, United Arab Emirates. KCT operates 20 quay cranes for loading and unloading container ships. Due to the high cost of ship idle times, interruptions during docking or delays when loading and unloading must be avoided – after all, time is money.

Collision avoidance when loading and unloading in ports

Loading and unloading in ports is always fast-paced. At the same time, safety is the highest priority. Preventing collisions with ship parts by monitoring port cranes can be particularly challenging. Accidents of this kind often cost several hundred thousands of euros. APM Terminals in Zeebrugge, Belgium, aimed to mitigate the risk of such occurrences.

Challenges

Protection

Avoiding collisions involving containers, cranes, and other objects is the highest priority when it comes to port logistics. Specific demands are placed on sensors in order to guarantee the level of outdoor safety and security required in ports, and SICK is perfectly placed to respond with its many years of experience and the innovative solutions it has to offer.

Position determination

SICK's sensors assist in correctly positioning and detecting freight and other objects. They record data and transmit it to the relevant controller to ensure that every item of cargo reaches its destination in one piece.

Measuring

Sensors and sensor systems measure the dimensions, contours, speeds, and distances involved in freight positioning, thereby optimizing transport routes and increasing handling safety for crane operators.

Detection

SICK's sensors provide assistance for controlling and maneuvering cranes and other vehicles. They detect containers and bulk materials that are to be picked up by transportation equipment and identify persons and objects in the vicinity of moving vehicles.
