Logistics gets smart

Greater efficiency in the entire supply chain

Companies are faced by a great challenge: acting as efficiently as possible. Material flows and intralogistics processes must be optimally coordinated with each other at all times. If there is a problem at one point, this impacts the entire value chain – and thus also competitiveness. Intelligent sensors and networked systems ensure efficient logistics processes as part of Industry 4.0.

Overview

With us, everything ends up where it belongs -– air freight, flight baggage, in-flight catering and, of course, you yourself.

The smooth running of many logistics processes at airports depends on sensors and sensor solutions from SICK. The aircraft lands precisely at the designated parking position, the unit load device ends up in the right freight plane and the passenger baggage is delivered to the right hands. Sensors from SICK control and monitor every movement precisely and reliably. They are integrated into many applications such as passenger boarding bridges, ground vehicles, baggage and air freight logistics, access control systems to secure areas, monitoring systems for buildings and open spaces as well as catering.

Caution on the apron

Multi-million-dollar damage that occurs during aircraft ground handling leads to high insurance payouts every year. As a result, ground handling services are encumbered with higher insurance premiums. In order to avoid damage, Lufthansa LEOS GmbH relies on SICK laser scanner experience when tugging aircrafts and is putting the APS driver assistance system from SICK to the test for its aircraft tractor fleet. At sites in Frankfurt and Munich, LEOS operates a fleet totaling 38 aircraft tractors. Each aircraft tractor deals with an average of eight to fifteen tugs or pushbacks a day. During these maneuvers, collisions with objects on the runway or in the hangar or even other aircrafts are possible.

End-to-end baggage tracking

Lost suitcases are more than just a nuisance. They reduce airline customer satisfaction and constantly generate costs. The IATA Resolution 753, which will soon come into force, is to change all this – with the ambitious aim of continuous 100% baggage tracking. In this context, you need to be able to rely on experienced partners. With laser, camera, and RFID technology, SICK is able to offer all three possible technologies for baggage tracking as well as providing support from a single source. This enables solutions with extremely long life cycles.

Challenges

Measurement

Solutions from SICK measure distances, overhangs, profiles, volume and weights reliably, which enables optimized workflows and maximum reliability in all processes. The sensors support the docking process for the passenger boarding bridge, detect oversized baggage, determine the volume of air freight and check the contour of ULDs.

Detection

Sensors from SICK are ideal for detecting the presence of people and objects of all types. The detection of the movement direction of passengers as well as the leading edges, levels and overruns of baggage and air freight ensures that processes perform at the highest level. SICK offers the right solution for any task.

Identification

The basic requirement for automated sorting and storage is quick and reliable identification of codes on baggage and pieces of freight. SICK offers scalable solutions with all identification technologies (laser, camera, RFID) for all code types; these technologies are easy to adapt to the respective application requirements.

Protection

Airports are subject to stringent safety requirements. Transfers from the land side to the air side must be monitored reliably and efficient protection must be provided for the airport building. In addition, hazardous areas must be secured to ensure personal protection and the highest level of system throughput. Sensor solutions from SICK support these efforts.
